Kai Thaís (B. 2003) is a Puerto Rican artist based in London. Her practice spans sculpture, photo, and experimental video, creating encounters with ‘anti bodies’. Thought frictions in found and repurposed materials she delves into embodied and often visceral experience of feminine desire, queer and chronically ill embodied realities in a colonial context. Understanding the body and the territory as objects of control, commerce, legislation. The body turns into a stage, a house, or the stretch of land. The transformation of the body as territory becomes an exercise in freedom and an imaginary of decolonization, where borders are uncertain and changeable.
With a sculptural practice based in image, found object, textile, and performance, her object-making is accompanied by research on feminist, posthuman, and decolonial theory. Giving form to the encounters through the tactile experience and material identity of her work. A photograph fragments the form. Textiles play on the feminine, insecurity, and vulnerability tied to the social roots of working with fabric and family history. In comparison, found objects are recipients of environment/subject encounters. They offer a rich array of textures in dialogue with skin, scars. Integrating these mediums explores the fluidity of identity and perception of the self.
Kai Thaís is a native of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. She completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Puerto Rico in 2025. She is currently pursuing her graduate studies at the Royal College of Art in London.
